RESIDENTIAL | KITCHEN AND DINING DESIGN

Project – Kitchen and Dining Design, Port Melbourne, VIC

This project focuses on creating a premium kitchen that serves as both a highly functional cooking space and an inviting area for entertaining, acting as the centerpiece of the client’s new home in Pickle Street, Port Melbourne. The client envisions a timeless, luxurious design that combines sophistication with warmth, fostering a welcoming yet stylish environment.

Key design requirements include:

  • Premium Appliances: Branded, integrated appliances where possible, such as an oven, cooktop with rangehood, fridge, dishwasher, and a spacious sink for large cookware.

  • High-End Materials: Stone, stainless steel, or other premium benchtops, excluding laminate, ensuring durability and a polished aesthetic.

  • Commercial-Grade Cabinetry: Door and drawer fronts that focus on both design excellence and long-lasting functionality.

  • Optimized Storage: A well-organized pantry to accommodate specialized equipment and appliances, with ample storage throughout the space. This includes under-stair storage to maximize available space efficiently.

  • Practical Layout: A user-centric layout that minimizes distances between key areas, promoting ease of use and fluid movement within the kitchen.

This design features neutral-toned cabinetry in shades of beige, taupe, and warm greys, complemented by luxurious marble-inspired benchtops. Black, emerald green, and off-white accents will be used to create a sophisticated yet cozy atmosphere, blending rustic charm with contemporary elegance.

Project Technology tool and spatial planning overview

This e-portfolio is generated using CAD-based drawings, further developed in Revit, and rendered with Enscape to provide high-quality visualisations. The project emphasizes kitchen spatial design, focusing on functionality, ergonomics, and aesthetics.

A well-planned kitchen layout ensures efficient movement and workflow, preventing obstructions in high-traffic areas. To enhance flow and safety, the island design features rounded edges instead of sharp corners, reducing collision risks. Key design principles such as balance, proportion, and rhythm guide material selection and color schemes. Strategic zoning for cooking, preparation, and dining ensures a seamless and practical space tailored for both efficiency and comfort.

This well-designed kitchen benchtop, set at an ergonomic height of 900mm, allows for comfortable food preparation, reducing strain on the back and shoulders while maintaining a natural working posture. This height aligns with the average countertop height, ensuring ease for users of varying heights during meal prep, cooking, and cleaning tasks. In terms of circulation, it’s essential to maintain a minimum of 1200mm of space between the cabinet and the island. This clearance ensures that individuals can move around the kitchen comfortably without feeling cramped, offering enough room for multiple people to work in the kitchen simultaneously. This layout promotes smooth transitions between work zones and reduces the risk of accidents or congestion in high-traffic areas. These principles, alongside the ergonomic height and spacious walkways, contribute to creating a kitchen that balances both practicality and comfort, enhancing the overall workflow and safety.
